GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina college student forced a 12-year-old Virginia girl to send him nude images and videos and threatened to send them to people she knew, police said.
The Apex Police Department charged 18-year-old Royce Andrew Reddix on Oct. 13 with eight counts of first-degree exploitation of a minor and a count of exploitation.
Reddix is on interim suspension from North Carolina A&T State University. He is free on bond and it couldn’t be determined Wednesday if he had an attorney.
A search warrant said a report was filed with the Salem, Virginia, Police Department in July by the girl’s parents. They said she had been forced to produce the images using an app and the suspect threatened to send them to people she knew unless she produced more.
According to the search warrant, the victim complied and sent the images and video over several weeks in April and May. The suspect posed as a 12-year-old girl from Alabama on the app.
Salem police determined the girl sent approximately 60 images.
In addition, the girl’s parents told police that the suspect had contacted several teammates on her basketball team, saying he was the girl’s best friend and needed to get in touch with her. The team’s coach told the girls not to respond.
In September, police said the victim said she had communicated with someone named “Andrew,” who admitted he had lied about being a 12-year-old girl. She was shown a picture of Reddix and identified him as “Andrew,” police said.
Detectives obtained the IP address linked to the suspect and tracked it to an address in the Apex area.
