ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jose Oquendo will return to his role as third base coach for the St. Louis Cardinals next season.
Oquendo stepped aside after 16 seasons as the St. Louis third base coach because of health problems prior to the 2016 season. He returns and will join former Cardinals outfielder Willie McGee on the coaching staff, though McGee’s title wasn’t announced Monday.
Former third base coach Mike Shildt has been moved to bench coach, and Ron Warner will remain to help coach the infield after being promoted from the minor leagues in June.
The Cardinals finished third in the National League Central this season and missed the playoffs for the second straight year, the first time the franchise has missed the postseason in back-to-back years since 2007-08.
