Traffic situation can’t continue
I have followed with interest Kauai’s road situation for over 25 years. I think about it every time I’m stuck in traffic. These are my conclusions.
We have two camps. First, there are those who are outraged because the same old perimeter road remains essentially unchanged. When the road is closed for some reason, usually an accident, nobody goes anywhere. Not to work, not to the airport, not to the hospital, not to fight a fire … nobody goes. Countless letters have suggested incorporating the cane haul roads as part of a solution.
The other camp is convinced that more (or better) roads will simply mean more people. More resorts, more tourists, more speed, more accidents, more “Mainland psychology.” A small island can only sustain so many people.
The two camps are on a collision course. Something needs to be done. Perhaps some leadership would help.
