Kauai must be prepared
You have probably been at a potluck with pasteles or gandules rice. They’re so ono, made with simple ingredients, and quite popular.
Did you ever wonder where they came from? Like so many cuisines of Hawaii, they came with laborers that worked the plantations, and these are from Puerto Rico. We have a shared history and a lot more in common with our countryman across the globe than we may realize.
Unfortunately, we also share our vulnerability as an isolated island in the middle of the sea with limited resources and too many people. Puerto Rico has been destroyed by Hurricane Maria and the people are in desperate need of help.
This isn’t a plea for us to help them, although that would be wonderful of you. This is a plea for us to help our ohana here at home, before we suffer from similar tragedy. One of the reasons they are having such a hard time is a lack of preparedness. We are at a pivotal time on Kauai where we have the opportunity to plan our growth and also plan for emergencies, but we need everyone to contribute!
Just like a potluck, you have to ask, “What can I bring?” The answer, in this situation, is clear. Please be aware of the county’s General Plan and the kind of Kauai you want to live on.

Let president worry about NFL behavior
A lot has been said about the many comments President Trump has made concerning NFL players and whether it isappropriate to stand, kneel or sit during the national anthem.
All the commentary I have seen says that the president should not spend his time on that subject when he could be focusedon more important issues. I disagree. I think he should focus on NFL behavior and leave the country alone.
