LIHUE — Elyse Litvack, a founder of Kumu’s Cupboard, was excited Tuesday at the Kukui Grove Center site.
Not only did Kumu’s Cupboard receive a wagonload of school supplies from Farmers Insurance, they received word of a matching- grant challenge.
“We just met with Marissa Sandblom of the Grove Farm Company, who approved a $5,000 matching grant this morning,” Litvack said. “This means people who donate to Kumu’s Cupboard will have their contribution matched by Grove Farm up to $5,000. This is the second time we’ve gotten the grant, and it will help us help the teachers tremendously.”
Litvack said the grant runs through the end of November, meaning people who contribute to Kumu’s Cupboard will be doubling their efforts up to the $5,000 ceiling.
“This doesn’t mean we’ll stop working,” Litvack said. “We’ll still be wrapping gifts during the holidays at the shopping center. But, we won’t be doing as much. Last year, I put in 29 hours during a 48-hour stretch. That’s a lot, but it was worth it.”
Robyn Keawe, a Kumu’s Cupboard director, said Kumu’s Cupboard will also be participating in the Grove Farm Community Swap Meet on Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Kumu’s Cupboard will also be visible when Kukui Grove Center hosts its annual Kauai Christmas Parade around the shopping center the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
Kumu’s Cupboard is a nonprofit where teachers can shop for school supplies, office supplies, materials for art and science project, and student incentives — for free.
