CLINTON, S.C. (AP) — Noah Shuler punched over for a 2-yard touchdown in the final four minutes of a scoreless game and Charleston Southern defeated Presbyterian 7-0 in a Big South Conference opener marked by defense and turnovers on Saturday.
Charleston Southern (3-3, 1-0) had turned the ball over each of the three times it had made it into Presbyterian territory, the last coming after they had reached the 10-yard line. The Buccaneers got the ball back two plays later, though, when Solomon Brown hit Presbyterian’s Ben Cheek, forcing a fumble recovered by Landon Sayegh at the 15.
Sayegh then sacked Cheek on Presbyterian’s (3-4, 0-1) final drive, on fourth-and-6, and the Buccaneers ran out the final 1:40.
Shuler gained 62 of Charleston Southern’s 159 yards rushing. Presbyterian’s Cheek passed for 128 yards and ran for 42 more.
Anthony Ellis sacked Cheek twice, becoming just the third player in Big South history to reach 20 in a career.
