THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Dontrell Taylor rushed for 130 yards and one touchdown, and Lorran Fonseca booted a school record five field goals as Nicholls held off Abilene Christian 29-20 on Saturday in the first meeting between the schools.
Nicholls (5-2, 4-1 Southland Conference) has won three straight after falling to Sam Houston State 66-17.
Fonseca led all scorers with 17 points as he kicked field goals of 27, 43, 40, 29 and 44 yards and added two extra points.
Nicholls got on the board when Kevin Johnson blocked a punt and Adrian Richardson recovered it in the end zone. Fonseca booted two of his field goals in the second quarter and Taylor scored from the 2 for a 20-10 lead at the break.
ACU (2-5, 2-3) closed to 26-20 when Tracy James grabbed a 3-yard touchdown pass from Dallas Sealey with 8:49 left. Fonseca responded with his longest kick of the day —44 yards— for the final score.
