LIHUE — Warren Palmeira of Wailua said he couldn’t find things like algebra back in 1974.
“My granddaughter has algebra at Kapaa High School, and she’s always asking me about it,” Palmeira said while thumbing through titles on the free table outside the Friends of the Lihue Public Library fall used book sale. “They never had things like this back in 1974. What burns me up is there are no CDs.”
Palmeira was delighted to learn there are a large number of CDs, DVDs, and even audio books, or books on CDs, on sale when the Friends of the Lihue Library open doors to its fall used book sale starting today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We have CDs,” said Carolyn Larson, Lihue Library manager. “We also have DVDs, and for this sale, a large selection of audio books which are quite popular.”
Larson said in addition to the selection of nonfiction and fiction titles, both in soft- and hardcover, they have added a Christmas section.
“We have choke large hardback fiction,” Larson said. “For whatever the reason, this sale has a large number of fiction titles in hardback.”
Proceeds go toward supporting programs and services at the Lihue Public Library.
Larson said the sales are possible because of dedicated volunteers like Dorene Sautner who likes to be unseen in photographs.
“She volunteers every week with the Friends of the Lihue Library,” Larson said. “Two days a week, she comes in and handles the incoming books, sorts and categorizes them so we can have these book sales. She does it all year long.”
Lani Kawahara, the Kapaa Public Library branch manager, said the Friends of the Kapaa Public Library will host its once-a-year annual book and bake sale this Saturday and Sunday as well.
Presale for members of the Friends of the Kapaa Public Library is Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m., and the public has an opportunity to shop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
“We have baked goods,” Kawahara said. “We’re unpacking now. We have lots of Blu-ray movies, Hawaiiana, children’s books, and cookbooks. There are always a lot of everything, though.”
David Thorpe, Koloa Public and School Library branch manager, said the Friends of Koloa Library will be hosting its used book sale on Oct. 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Koloa Library. There will be CDs and DVDs, too.
