KAPAA — Jenny Yukimura has been a cancer survivor for at least 50 years.
She was joined by her daughter, JoAnn Yukimura, and scores of other people during the 5th annual Samuel Mahelona Hospital Breast Cancer Walk on Ke Ala Hele Makalae fronting the Kapaa Neighborhood Center.
The Mahelona Hospital cancer walk is one of several events celebrating October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, bringing awareness of breast cancer (yes, even men get diagnosed with breast cancer) and the importance of early detection and getting annual checks done.
Other visible examples of cancer awareness observances included the Paint the Town Pink walk presented by the Kauai Committee on the Status of Women, Party in Pink zumbathons hosted by several Kauai zumba groups, including the upcoming Oct. 18 event hosted by Troy Lazaro and the Rockstars at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 5 p.m.
