LIHUE — The Kauai High School boys bowling team soared to a 2,523 pinfall (838, 853, 832) over the challenge of Waimea boys, who tied the Raiders twice over the past five weeks.
The high score pushed the Red Raider boys to the Kauai Interscholastic Federation title, followed by the Menehune, who finished with a 2,158 pinfall (733, 714, 711). With one week remaining in the season, the Kapaa boys finished third with a 1,978 pinfall (750, 635, 593) despite Kalani Young rolling individual high-game honors at 265.
Kauai Christian Academy’s two bowlers did not qualify for team scoring, but rolled games of 239, 260 and 172.
Kaylee Braun rolled individual high-game honors at 201 to help lead the Kauai girls to a 32-pin lead over the Waimea girls, 2,084 (716, 779, 589) to Waimea’s 2,052 (660, 725, 667).
The Menehune wahine clinched the KIF title during last week’s roll.
The Kapaa girls finished third at 1,786 (633, 581, 572), and Kauai Christian Academy, fielding two girls, did not qualify for team scoring, their duo rolling 218, 215 and 226.
Following five weeks of bowling, Kapaa’s Young leads the individual race with a 188 nine-game average. He is eight pins ahead of Waimea’s Jaime Mararagan, who holds a 180 average, just two pins ahead of fellow Menehune Edmelle Medina, who sits at 178. Jotis Russell-Christian of Kapaa follows at 156.
Kapaa’s Dana Murata leads the individual girls bowling with a 195 nine-game average. Krysten Padasdao of Kauai High School follows at 167, chased by Braun at 149 and Kauai’s Sommer Luis at 144.
The KIF bowling season rolls its final balls Thursday at Kauai Bowling Center starting at 5:30 p.m.
The KIF hosts the 2017 Billy Tees Hawaii High School Athletic Association state bowling championships on Oct. 26 and 27 at the Kauai Bowling Center.
