SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Delmon Williams’ 33-yard touchdown pass to Aulden Knight gave Hampton a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and the Pirates held on to beat Savannah State 17-10 on Saturday.
Knight’s score made it 17-7 for Hampton (3-2, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) with 6:41 left in the game. The Tigers (0-5, 0-3) closed the deficit with 3:18 left on Giovanni Lugo’s 41-yard field goal and got the ball back 32 seconds later. But Savannah State’s closing drive stalled at midfield, ending with a turnover on downs in the final minute.
Yahkee Johnson opened the scoring on Hampton’s first possession with a 7-yard TD run after a Savannah State fumble set the Pirates up at the Tigers 18. Savannah State tied it on its next possession with D’Vonn Gibbons’ 32-yard TD pass to Cameron White.
Adam Brown’s field goal gave Hampton the lead for good at 10-7 early in the third.
