LIHUE — Melissa McFerrin-Warrack, the special events coordinator at Kukui Grove Center, had to make a deal with her son Finnigan, Wednesday night during an inspection of the developing Community Haunted House by Mauka Man Productions.
“Finnigan wanted out,” Melissa said. “I had to make a deal with him. We’ll go to the Fun Factory after this.”
Finnigan, a first grade student at Island School, huddled in a corner while Melissa completed her tour of the developing house of spooks and clowns.
“We have aliens, too,” a voice from out of the darkness said. “Why can’t we run around the mall chasing shoppers?”
The Community Haunted House which opens Friday and continues on weekends through Oct. 28 at the Kukui Grove Center is just a part of the spooky announcements celebrating fall and Halloween at the mall.
Proceeds from the haunted house, which is available in a keiki version, will be shared among four nonprofit organizations — Toys for Tots, the 4-H Livestock Club, Boy Scout Troop 334, and Cub Pack 334
Located in a corner spot near Deja Vu Surf Hawaii which has its entrance already dressed for the spooky October, the Community Haunted House will be open Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 4 to 8 p.m. near the Kauai Society of Artists gallery which will sport its 2017 Art Kauai exhibition through Oct. 28.
Dogs take the stage on Oct. 21 when pooches get an opportunity to don costumes of Halloween at the Howl-O-Ween Dog Costume contest presented by Kauai Animals Welfare Society and Natural Pets Hawaii at the exhibition area outside the haunted house. Activity starts at 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. as a warm-up to the big Halloween festival.
Halloween takes center stage on Oct. 28 starting with the Kauai United Way Walk-A-Thon where participants are encouraged to get dressed up in Halloween finery while giving back to their local nonprofit.
As the walkers return from the course around the shopping center, registration opens for the Halloween Festival and the shopping mall’s Trick-or-Treating. The costume contest registration starts at 10 a.m. with the center trick-or-treating and keiki haunted house starting at noon.
