Pasteles, preparedness and the General Plan
You have probably been at a potluck with pasteles or gandules rice. They’re so ono, made with simple ingredients, and quite popular. Did you ever wonder where they came from? Like so many cuisines of Hawaii, they came with laborers who worked the plantations, and these are from Puerto Rico. We have a shared history and a lot more in common with our countryman across the globe than we may realize.
Unfortunately, we also share our vulnerability as an isolated island in the middle of the sea with limited resources and too many people. Puerto Rico has been destroyed by Hurricane Maria and the people are in desperate need of help. This isn’t a plea for us to help them, although that would be wonderful of you. This is a plea for us to help our ohana here at home, before we suffer from similar tragedy.
One of the reasons they are having such a hard time is a lack of preparedness. We are at a pivotal time on Kauai where we have the opportunity to plan our growth and also plan for emergencies, but we need everyone to contribute! Just like a potluck, you have to ask, “What can I bring?” The answer, in this situation, is clear. Please bring yourself to the General Plan public meeting today at 8:30 a.m. at the convention hall in Lihue, and bring your testimony for the kind of Kauai you want to live on.

NFL, Hollywood elite, comedians all dictating politics
Why are comedians, actors and sports figures all of the sudden dictating politics? If I wanted to watch politics I would watch MSNBC, CNN, CSPAN or FOX. When I watch late-night talk shows, I want comedy, not the host’s personal views on politics. Who cares? Just like I don’t care about my favorite football player’s personal view on politics. That’s not what they get paid to do or why people watch them.
One of the many reasons we watch sports and comedy is to get away from the stress of politics, especially during these modern days of mayhem.
NFL football has been ruined with politics by both players and now President Trump.
If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, Trump tweeted recently, “he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, you’re fired. Find something else to do!”
I find it baffling to see people up in arms about Trump concerning his remarks about NFL players taking a knee during the national anthem and in the same sentence saying it’s the NFL players’ right to freedom of speech/protest.
Like him or not, he’s an American with those same rights as the players, president or not. Some people are completely blinded to their own hypocrisy.
Late-night comedians, the Hollywood elite and sports personalities should all stay out of politics. The president in the same essence should concentrate on politics and stay out of football. I may agree with the president. However, like the Bible says: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1
