Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from “The Shadow” radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.

What is the status to address the erosion on ‘Aliomanu Road? When is the road scheduled to be repaired?
We are presently working on the Environmental Assessment for the Aliomanu Road project. Once the Environmental Assessment is complete, we will work with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to realign the road to address erosion issues.
Kekaha Landfill
How many more years does the Kekaha Landfill have before the county has to move to another location?
Kekaha Landfill currently has a little over 3 years remaining for Phase II vertical expansion. However, once the Kekaha Landfill Phase II Cell II lateral expansion project is complete, it will provide an additional 6 to 8 years of capacity. In the meantime, the county works to site a new landfill.

What are the county’s current plans regarding curbside recycling?
Plans for curbside recycling would be part of the development of a Materials Resource Facility (MRF), which is currently part of the proposed Maalo Resource Recovery Park.
