Constitution protects everyone’s right to protest
In response to Mr. Beeksma’s letter of Sept. 26:
Sir, I believe that you do not understand the Constitution of the United States nor the circumstances that brought about the founding of this great nation.
The Constitution gives us, the citizens, the right to peaceful protest, the right to stand up and say that we don’t like our government or the direction of the country, it gives us the right to be disrespectful if that is a citizen’s choice. I can think of no more peaceful way of protesting than taking a knee. I can think of no more American ideal than protesting our national anthem.
The fact that those players can protest is exactly what makes America great. You, of course, are welcome to protest their protest, boycott their teams and tear up a jersey, but try to keep in mind, what they are doing is as American as you can get.
On a personal note, I doubt very much that any of them have the intention of being disrespectful to our country or our military, but that’s just semantics for this discussion.

The party is over
Being residents of Kauai for over 20 years, the majority of that in Kalaheo, we were so excited to see the signs that KoloaRoad was going to be repaired. So excited knowing how overdue it is and driving it four times a day, we couldn’t wait to enjoythat smooth ride.
After three days of sitting in traffic and/or avoiding Koloa Road during the construction we noticed the county/state was onlypatching the areas deemed necessary.
Wow, what a let-down. Not only is the new “patching” uneven, rollercoaster and an eyesore, it’s a joke!
Why did random streets in Lawai get full repair and this main road get neglected? We all pay taxes that supposedly go towardprojects like this. Please tell me the concrete, construction supply and garbage truck companies pay more taxes than theaverage SUV, sedan owner on Kauai does.
They all use this road and must do more damage to it than my Toyota Tacoma does. Visitors who spend money and fuelKauai’s economy must be horrified to drive this road and many more on the island.
As the mayor and the county/state, you should be embarrassed. Sorry, Omao residents, we may just use Omao Road to get tothe South Shore from Kalaheo.
As if you haven’t been inconvenienced by all the detours and mass of traffic daily already.
Jules Cannon, Lawai
