LIHUE — Artist K.T. Zeidner was pleasantly surprised that one of her two pieces in the 32nd annual Art Kauai exhibit earned an award.
Zeidner was in the company of Tomoko Ouchi on Sunday doing gallery-sitting duty at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center where Art Kauai is showing.
“This was a tightly-juried show,” Zeidner said. “Patricia Correia, the juror from Topanga Canyon, California, did a really good job with the difficult task of selecting which pieces made it. We had a lot of entries, and I believe a lot did not make the selection. I was happy two of my pieces were chosen. To receive an award, this is quite an honor.”
Ouchi had three pieces on exhibit. One piece, “Kathy’s Bananas,” is being shown adjacent to Zeidner’s “Red Pears on White.”
“Look at that,” Zeidner said. “It’s very realistic. The bananas appear to be jumping out at you.”
The Kauai County Council, in a certificate, recognized KSA, and described Art Kauai as the organization’s premier exhibition, featuring outstanding artists living and working on Kauai, and whose work is chosen by a juror for the exhibit.
“This is the only Kauai exhibition that is visited by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, created in 1965 by the Hawaii State Legislature to ‘promote, perpetuate, preserve and encourage culture and the arts, history and the humanities as central to the quality of life of the people of Hawaii,’” states the council certificate.
The SFCA will acquire three pieces from Art Kauai, including “Watermelon Wedges” by Sally French, which also earned the KSA Invitation Award; “Untitled” by David Kuraoka; and “Hau Thicket Triptych” by Robert Lober, which also earned the Art Patron Award.
Art Kauai is available for viewing through Oct. 28 at Kukui Grove Center.
