If you’re on the lookout for what may be the best deal on Kauai when it comes to a breakfast sandwich, your search may be over.
The name of this particular restaurant might surprise you since we’re talking breakfast and this doesn’t really sound like a place for breakfast, but once you visit, you’ll understand:
Bamboo Sushi.
It’s in Anchor Cove Shopping Center in Lihue, almost a bit hidden away. Keep walking and you’ll find two entrances, one from the outside, where you have a partial view of Kalapaki Bay, and one from the inside of the shopping area.
Either way, you’ll be good to go.
The staff is quick and friendly. When my wife and I sat down for breakfast, it wasn’t more than a minute when our waiter arrived with menus, said hello, and returned with two tall glass of iced water.
We knew what we wanted because it’s a favorite and perhaps the best $5 you’ll spend on Kauai. It’s the breakfast sandwich and yes, at $5, it’s a deal. For the money, you get a lot. Two strips of bacon, eggs (how you like them), and a slice of cheese, all delivered on flaky, tender sandwich buns.
You can add hash browns (crisp and fresh) for a few dollars, if you want a bit more to fill up, but the sandwich is perfect for a nice, easy breakfast. Stop in, spend 20 minutes, have a cup of coffee, too, and enjoy the view.
This is a terrific way to start your day, mind you. And quite affordable.
There are plenty of other breakfast choices on the menu, and all are good. No matter what you order, you’ll come away satisifed. But the breakfast sandwich is ideal for those of us who like something light and simple to enjoy with coffee and conversation.
We should add that chickens could approach your outside able looking for a handout, as that’s what chickens do, but it’s not a great idea to feed them. It’s discouraged, for one main reason: Once you feed one, more are soon to be at your feet and under your table. And everyone will know you’re guilty of feeding them. And not everyone likes eating their meal with chickens waiting for their share of the bounty.
All that said, as I’m soft touch, if you discreetly sneak them a tiny piece of your food, no more than two, it is possible to get away with it, not attractino attention and ease a guilty conscience.
The inside of the restaurant is bright and inviting, though you may still be visited by a curious chicken. Don’t feed it or your fellow diners might not find it as humorous as you do.
Bamboo Sushi, 3416 Rice Street, is open for lunch and dinner and depending on when you go, there are beer specials.
If you have time, take a few minutes to walk around, check out the shops and meet some of the owners and staff. A good group of friendly folks.
Back to that $5 breakfast sandwich. You will like it, that I guarantee, and it is indeed one of the best deals around. But don’t let yourself get carried away and order two or three, which is easily done by some of us lacking will power.
