Emery Joseph Opuʻulani Kaiawe Gifford
Emery Joseph Opuʻulani Kaiawe Gifford of Anahola passed away on Aug. 19, 2017, at the age of 80. He was born on Dec. 24, 1936 in Lihue, and raised in Niumalu. He was a retired security guard at Wilcox Medical Center, worked at Hanalei Bay Resort and Better Brands, and served in the U.S. Navy.
He was preceded in death by wife Elizabeth Kauo, mother Adelaide Gifford Calkin, sister Lynette Vaughan and his beloved grampa and gramma George and Annie Kaiawe.
He is survived by his wife Carylee Gifford, stepsons Joel Pahukula of Puhi, Kaleo (Andrea) Pahukula of Maui, sisters Marie (Jim) Watson of Florida and Ilona Souza of Lihue, niece Puanani (Scott) Knight of Maui, nephews Marc Souza, Michael Prioste of Honolulu and Patrick (Kimberly) Beaman of Idaho, and grandchildren Jayden, Jaxson and Kamalei Pahukula of Maui. He is also survived by numerous aunties, uncles, cousins and friends.
Family and friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Borthwick Mortuary in Koloa. Visitation is at 9 a.m. with services at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. The family suggests casual attire and welcomes flowers.
