The 9th annual Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon begins at 6 this morning on Poipu Road in front of the Poipu ShoppingVillage. About 2,000 people are registered.
While traffic will flow in and around the Koloa, Poipu, Lawai and Kalaheo areas, there will be some lane and road closures between 5 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. It is recommended that travel in these areas be limited during those times.
The first 11 miles are run together, including up the Tree Tunnel (Maluhia Road), then along Kaumualii Highway and down through Omao, before the half marathoners veer off back to Poipu to their oceanfront finish while the marathoners continue up Koloa Road to the neighborhoods of Lawai and Kalaheo before heading back down to Poipu.
The marathon finishers’ party and awards ceremony will be held on the oceanfront lawn at the Koloa Landing Resort. Race participants as well as supporters can enjoy food, refreshments and live entertainment until the early afternoon.
