POIPU — When the runners and walkers in the Ninth annual Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday are done, a feast awaits.
There is plenty of food and drink at the finish line celebration, which will be at Koloa Landing Resort. It’s likely more than you will find at any other marathon.
Here’s what finishers will refuel on:
• 500 pounds of fruit (melon, watermelon and pineapple)
• 700 yogurts
• 400 bagels
• 300 croissants
• 400 muffins
• 400 cinnamon rolls/doughnuts
• 60 gallons of orange juice
• 60 large bags of Maui chips
• 500 turkey/veggie wraps
• 8 kegs of beer
Runners and walkers are given food and drink before the race, too.
The starting line offers Kauai Coffee, water, juice, pastries, fresh fruit, bagels, peanut butter, cream cheese and yogurt.
Why so much?
Race founded Jeff Sacchini has run many races all over the country and was never overwhelmed by the finish line festivities, most importantly, the spread of food and drink. So he wanted to make sure that The Kauai Marathon experience was exceptional in the culinary department for both the start and finish lines.
That’s one of the reasons, along with the entertainment and awards, that everyone hangs out instead of heading right home.
