LIHUE — The first football games for the Kauai Interscholastic Federations will take place as early as Aug. 5 when Kapaa High School travels to Maui, and the Kauai High School Red Raiders host the Warriors from Kamehameha Schools-Big Island.
LIHUE — The first football games for the Kauai Interscholastic Federations will take place as early as Aug. 5 when Kapaa High School travels to Maui, and the Kauai High School Red Raiders host the Warriors from Kamehameha Schools-Big Island.
Those are the first matches of the 2017-2018 year according to the KIF schedule which was released, Thursday.
Kauai High School will host the junior varsity Warriors from the Big Island in a pre-season match starting at 5 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium, with the varsity teams kicking off 30 minutes following the completion of the JV match.
“We’re working,” said Kauai High School football coach Derek Borrero who had his players working in the weight room, Friday. “We’ll be doing the field after the circuit.”
Waimea High School will see its first gridiron action on Aug. 12 when it hosts Pac-5 in a single pre-season game starting at 7 p.m. at Hanapepe Stadium.
The first regular season game will take place Aug. 25, the same weekend as the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair, when Waimea hosts Kauai at Hanapepe Stadium with the JV match starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity game kicking off 30 minutes following the completion of the JV game.
The KIF will host night games through the first round. At the release of the schedule, there is still the possibility of night games for the remainder of the season as the schedule states two starting times for games starting Sept. 16 and beyond.
William Arakaki, in an email with the schedule, said the schedule for the Winter and Spring is not complete at this time, and updates will be done as it is completed.
Kehau Regidor, the Kauai High School girls volleyball coach, said she will be taking her team off-island for a preseason match as well as hosting Hanalani for a preseason match in August, ahead of the first regular season match on Aug. 30 when Kauai travels to Waimea starting with the JV game at 5 p.m. and the varsity match starting no earlier than 6:30 p.m.
Bowling will have its first matches on Sept. 7 from 5:30 p.m., and Waimea High School will host its Invitational cross country meet on Sept. 9 starting at 7:30 a.m.
Air Riflery is scheduled to host a preseason tournament at Island School on Aug. 26. The first matches of the regular season is Aug. 30 when Waimea hosts Kauai at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, and Island School hosts Kapaa at its Puhi campus. Both matches start at 3 p.m.
The KIF Cheerleading championships close out the fall season sports with the meet being held at Kauai High School gym starting at 7:30 p.m.
