Matsue Higa Fukushima
Matsue Higa Fukushima, 103, passed away on June 9, 2017, at Wilcox Medical Center.
Born on April 13, 1914, in Wahiawa, Kauai, she was a retired preschool teacher.
She was preceded in death by her husband Katsuyuki Fukushima, son Alvin Fukushima, brother Bill Yasuo Higa, and parents Tozo and Kana Higa.
She is survived by sons Dennis (Jerilyn) Fukushima of Lihue, Calvin (Rowena) Fukushima of Lihue, Bernard Fukushima of Kapahi and Eugene Noel Fukushima of Lihue, daughter Joy (Randall) Goto of Lihue, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, brother Kenichi Higa of Nuuanu, Oahu, sisters Tomiko Higa of Lihue, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services are planned. The family requests no monetary offerings.
Garden Island Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
Shawn Thomas Sarmiento
Shawn Thomas Sarmiento, 43, of Koloa, passed away on June 9, 2017, at Wilcox Medical Center.
Born on July 2, 1973, in Lihue, he worked as a cook with the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa.
He is survived by his parents Pablo and Nadia Sarmiento of Koloa, brothers Paul (Cheryl) Sarmiento of Las Vegas and Ryan (Taryn Moura) Sarmiento of Koloa, sisters Tanya (Troy) Sakamoto of Mililani, Shellen (Gerald Abiley) Sarmiento of Koloa and Mindy (Jay) Matsunaga of Lawai, hanai sister Kimberly Tada of Wailua, and eight nephews, two nieces and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 15, at St. Raphael Church in Koloa. Visitation will be from 8 to 9:45 a.m. with Mass at 10 a.m.
The family requests flowers be omitted.

Jiro Yukimura
Jiro Yukimura of Hanamaulu passed away on April 6, 2017, at the Garden Isle Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Lihue on Nov. 17, 1920, he was 96, a retired probation officer with the Family Court and a Military Intelligence Service (MIS) World War II veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hisakichi and Shima Yukimura, and his brother Yoshio Yukimura.
He is survived by his wife Jennie, children JoAnn Yukimura (John Wehrheim) of Lihue, John (Hinda) Yukimura of Edmonds, Washington, Miles Yukimura of Lihue, Kathy (Mark) Fertello of Brier, Washington and David Yukimura of Lihue, grandchildren Maile Walters (Patrick) of Kalihiwai, Rachel Yukimura of Oakland, California, David Fertello of North Hollywood, California, Jesse Yukimura of Miami, Kara Fertello of Honolulu and Audrey and Elise Yukimura of Lihue, and one great-grandchild, Ualani Walters of Kalihiwai.
He was a warm, unassuming man with a keen sense of humor. He loved his family and friends, the ocean and the outdoors, classical music, languages, painting, and playing his ukulele with a can of cold beer close by. He was a faithful Christian and a member of the Y’s Men Club, a service club to the YMCA. As a probation officer, he showed compassion with discipline. Many of his clients remember with affection how he helped them get through a rough time of their lives. He also had a strong commitment to social justice. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 15, at Lihue Christian Church, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. The family suggests aloha or casual attire.
If on the day of the service parking looks problematic, the family suggests, for those able to walk, considering of War Memorial Convention Hall or Kauai Economic Development Board parking lots for ease of ingress and egress to and from event. Handicap parking and some regular parking will be provided at the church.
Nancy Lee Bunyan
Nancy Lee Bunyan passed away on June 27, 2017, at Kauai Care Center in Waimea. She was born March 18, 1925, in Beverly, Massachusetts.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald W. Bunyan, parents Harvey and Nema (Tower) Watkins and sister Bernetta Watkins.
Stepdaughter Wyanne Bunyan lives on Kauai, and stepson Gerry Mikesell lives in Temecula, California.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 20, at 5 p.m. at Lihue United Church.
