KAPAA — Be on the lookout for a lost, aggressive dog in the Wailua and Kapaa area, the same canine that reportedly attacked two pets in June.
He is a brown, gray and white, unneutered male pit bull who goes by the name of Makaleha, and his owner said she hasn’t seen him since June 16.
The dog may be wandering in the Kapaa/Wailua area.
Early this week, Kauai officials put out a notice they were seeking Rebecca Au and her dog Makaleha in connection with two attacks that landed the victims in the hospital.
Thursday afternoon, Au came voluntarily into Kauai Humane Society and said she was issued a court summons for both incidents.
KHS officials say Au “stated that the location of Makaleha is unknown to her at this time,” and the last time she saw the dog was the morning of June 16, at Marine Camp following the attack on “Stinger” the Airedale.
That was the second time Makaleha has reportedly injured another dog.
On June 13, Kona the 9-year old, miniature chocolate, longhaired dachshund was sent to an animal hospital in Oahu after Makaleha reportedly came out of nowhere, picked the dog up and started shaking him.
Kona is recovering from surgery to fix puncture wounds and a damaged spine, and owner Heidi Sasan Duarte said she hopes daily therapy will allow him to walk again.
KHS officials thanked Kauai Police Department for their help in the situation, as well as the public.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Makaleha should call KHS at 632-0610, ext. 105, or Kauai Police Department dispatch at 241-1711, or email fieldservices@kauaihumane.org.
