Mildred Maihiokalani Debusca ‘Mili’ Pereira
Mildred Maihiokalani Debusca “Mili” Pereira, 87, of Kapaa, died at Crystal Cove Rehabilitation Center in Newport Beach, California, on April 25, 2017.
Born in Niumalu on May 2, 1929, she was a retired employee of Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California, and Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Lihue.
She was preceded in death by husband Adam G. Pereira, daughter Debra L. Pereira Morse, son-in-law Rick Morse, parents Mariano Pacis Debusca and Annie Adolpho Andrade, in-laws Antone and Mary Pereira, brothers Anthony Martin and Joseph Martin, and sisters Cecilia Farias, Julia Dixon, Jean Oneha and Jane Ching.
She is survived by daughter Annie L. Makaena (Charles) Morgan of Santa Ana, California, son Patrick Kaheaokalani (Paulette) Pereira of Tucson, Arizona, brothers Fred Debusca of Lihue and Mariano “Kahea” Debusca of Aiea, Oahu, and sister Anita A. L. Andrade (Dennis) Aquino of Lihue. She is also survived by grandchildren Adam Makaena, Aja M. Makaena (Teva) Fourcade, Anthony K. (Sara) Morgan, Madison Morgan, Kawika M. Morse, great-grandchildren Kupukupu Makaena, Hawaiki Fourcade and Haniwai Fourcade, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held May 6, 2017, at Newport Beach, California.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at the Kapaa chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) at 4561 Ohia St., Kapaa. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. with services at 10:45 a.m. Inurnment will be private.
Virgil Boyd Thompson
Virgil Boyd Thompson of Lawai passed away on June 4, 2017, at the age of 88. He was the owner of Boyd’s Industrial Parts & Hydraulics.
He was born in 1928 on a cattle ranch in Arthur, Nebraska. After serving in the Army in WWII he started a trucking business in Arcata, California. There he met the love of his life, Jean Lucille Alden. They married in 1949 and eventually settled in Rio Dell, California, where they raised four children.
He was an active volunteer serving on the Rio Dell School Board and a member of the Lion’s Club. He helped the Little League and was active in the Scotia Union Church for many years. He had many lifelong friends in the community and was always there to help someone in need.
In 1955 he opened the first of three auto parts stores in Humboldt County, California. He moved his business to Kauai in 1999. He found the parts business personally rewarding and fulfilling and loved to get his customers up and running. He remained in the parts business for the rest of his life.
Another joy in his life was watching his grandchildren grow up. He also loved music and had a beautiful tenor voice. He was in the choir at Waimea United Church of Christ for many years. He loved singing with the family and hearing the choir and his children perform.
He was preceded in death by his son Timothy Thompson, sister Arlene Samuelson, and parents Charles H. and Emma Thompson.
He is survived by his wife Jean Thompson of Lawai, son Charles Thompson of Napa, California, daughters: Sara (Scott) Sloan of Lawai and Ellen (Vic Wright) Thompson of Sebastopol, California, grandchildren Emma Sloan and Eli Sloan, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was buried in Rohnerville, California. A memorial service will be held on July 1, 2017, in Waimea at the United Church of Christ, 4080 Makeke Rd. Visitation with the family will start at 9 a.m., followed by the service at 9:30 a.m. The family suggests aloha attire.
Joseph E. Sabala
Joseph E. Sabala, 84, passed away on June 4, 2017, at his home in Pearl City.
He is survived by sons Leonard (Lola), Jonathan Sr., daughter Shelly (James) Espiritu, six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be held on July 8, 2017, at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., with lunch to follow after the Mass.
Frances Tazuko Ikeda
Frances Tazuko Ikeda, 89, of Lawai, passed away on June 17, 2017.
Born on March 30, 1928, in Elk Grove, California, she was a retired clerk with Boeing.
She was married in Las Vegas on Feb. 17, 1979.
She was preceded in death by husband Katsumi Ikeda, parents Kumazo and Shizuko Takeda, brothers Fred (Reiko) Takeda, Harris (Judy) Takeda, Paul Takeda and Robert Takeda, sisters Lucy (Eddie) Kitayama and Mary (Ed) Robinson, nephews Johnny Kitayama and Tony Takeda, and stepson Richard O’Brien.
She is survived by stepson Patrick Ikeda of Honolulu, stepdaughter Diane (Brian) Turnbull of California, grandsons Brandon and Blake Ikeda of Honolulu, brothers Alfred (Jinko) Takeda of California and Tom (Rumi) Takeda of California, and sister Lorraine (Kazoh) Watanabe of Japan.
She was a beloved auntie to numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at a future date.
Garden Island Motuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
Hiroshi Clark Nakashita
Hiroshi Clark Nakashita of Lawai passed away on June 13, 2017, at the age of 69.
Born on May 30, 1948 in Tokyo, Japan, he was a bartender at Eating House 1849 and formerly Roy’s Restaurant.
He was preceded in death by parents Ben and Yoshiko Nakashita.
He is survived by brothers David Nakashita and Arthur “Achi” Nakashita, son Ceser Del Rosario and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary, Koloa.
Pak Sheong Yong
Pak Sheong Yong of Kekaha passed away on April 19, 2017, at the age of 88. Born on Dec. 3, 1928 in Hanalei, he was a retired county supervisor and member of the Hawaii Army National Guard.
He was preceded in death by wife Rosabelle Paalua Yong, father Pon Lee Yong, mother Bernice (Akui) Yong, and sisters Hazel Kawada and Levinia Kaauwai.
He is survived by sons Robert (Sharon) Yong of Kealakekua, Hawaii, Hiram (Ermine Akuna) Yong of Eleele, daughters Stephanie (Scott) Taylor of Waimea, Yosabel Yong of Kekaha, Bernice (Joseph Sablan) Yong Kekaha; sisters: Glorianna Lane of Mililani,Oahu, Alice Pacheco of Kilauea; 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, July 1, 2017, from noon to 12:45 p.m., at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe, where services will be held at 1 p.m. The family suggests aloha attire.
