The Friends of Bethany Hamilton Foundation announced a free youth conference set for July 22 at the Kauai Christian Academy Community Center.
The theme is “Rooted,” based on the Scripture Colossians 2:7. The outreach is designed for youth ages 12-18, “giving them the opportunity to be encouraged and rooted in their faith.”
“Kauai’s youth are dear to my heart,” said Bethany Hamilton, a pro surfer. “Growing up here on Kauai I know the different challenges and struggles all the kids are facing so it’s awesome to be able to remind them that there is a God who loves them very much.”
Youth here struggle with many issues such as a broken homes, suicide, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and many other issues consistent with island living, said Sarah Hill, development director.
“Through Rooted Kauai, we hope to inspire them with a deeper understanding of their life’s significance through inspiring messages given by great speakers,” she said.
Speakers include Hamilton and Pastor Michael Ancheta. The conference will include games, food, and prizes.
The Christa McAuliffe School of Arts and Sciences has also asked Friends of Bethany Hamilton to help it select a Kauai student to receive a one-year scholarship.
