Donna Maxine (Friend) Schulze
Donna Maxine (Friend) Schulze, the Lavender Lady of Kilauea, 92 years old, passed away peacefully on April 27, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Born on May 27, 1924, in Decatur Illinois to Oscar and Hazel Mae (Dukes) Friend, she is preceded in death by her parents, her husband George Schulze of Kilauea and 2 children – Melodye Dabney and Joey Swanson, as well as Glenn Petrini (husband of Gay Holden) and grandson Michael Doyle. She is survived by her 4 children: Happy Holden (Lydia) of Zeeland, Michigan; Jolly Holden (Lynda) of Marietta, Georgia; Gay Holden of Hollywood, Florida; and Honey Charles (William “BC”) of Hanamaulu, as well as 9 grandchildren and hanai grand daughter, and 14 great grandchildren. Donna was a former Executive Director of the YMCA of Kauai (first woman to ever hold this position) and a retired school teacher and athletics coach, called “Coach Grandma” by many.
Donna’s community service to Kauai spanned decades, and during that time she received several community awards: Volunteer of the Year, Kauai YMCA (1984), Aloha Spirit (1995), Kauai’s outstanding senior woman (1997), and Family court volunteer. An avid runner, she and George joined the Garden Island Roadrunners and completed the first Kauai marathon in 1978 and, as a result, received the Presidential sports award from President Jimmy Carter in 1978. In later years, she won Kauai’s #1 Wahine Runner Award, and continued running until she was 88. Her running career spanned 218 races including that encompassed 5 marathons and 4 half-marathons.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held at the Kauai Christian Fellowship, 4000 Kilauea Rd., Kilauea, Saturday May 27, 2 to 4 p.m. The family requests aloha or casual attire, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to YMCA of Kauai, 4477 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766.
Ashlet Sarah Marie Girald
Ashlet Sarah Marie Girald of Kapaa passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on May 1, at the age of 62. She was born in Koloa, Kauai on Sept. 11, 1954, and was the Vice President of Kauai Freight Services, Inc.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Rocky Lacro; In-laws, Manuel and Constance Girald; sister-in-law, Geraldine Girald and father, Samuel Apao.
Ashlet is survived by her husband, Stephen Girald Sr.; son, Stephen (Terry) Girald Jr.; daughter, Debbie Girald; grandchildren, Samantha Girald, Naiya Girald, Uraiya Girald; brother-in-law, Robert (Gloria) Girald; nieces, Crissy, Kira and Casey; nephews, Robert II and Michael; mother, Rose Marie Lacro sisters, Donna, Nan, Corvette, Marion and Richlette; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, June 3, at Kilohana Plantation in Lihue with visitation beginning at 8:30 a.m. and services celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Luncheon to follow.

Ned A. Sparks
Ned A. Sparks, 69, of Lihue, Hawaii; passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2017.
He is survived by siblings Rose Anne Shoemaker, Hawaii; Denny Sparks, Lancaster, PA; Susie Kamermeier, Alaska; Sandy married to Joe King, Bedford, PA; Sherron Sparks married to Miachael Hain, State College, PA and Lynetta married to Robert Kauffman, Clearville, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Akers Funeral Home.
William ‘Bill’ Harrison
William “Bill” Harrison, born on Feb. 27, 1952, in New Hampshire, passed away on May 11, 2017, in Kaua’i, Hawai’i. He was a retired Boeing Aeronautical Engineer.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Doreen Harrison.
Bill is survived by his son, Brett (Megan) Harrison of Seattle, Washington; grandson, Tanner Harrison; sister, Holy (Jon) Cree of Idaho; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Arrangements were handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Dr. Lewis ‘Kahuna Lanakila’ Edward Graham II
Dr. Lewis “Kahuna Lanakila” Edward Graham II of Lihue passed away at home on March 9, 2017, at the age of 64. He was born in Virginia on April 4, 1952, and was a writer of (11) books. A very accomplished person and steward to his community. During his life he was major of Brisbane, CA from 1987 -1988. He started the first recycling program in CA during that time. He earned 5 PhD’s from Stanford and Georgia University. He was also the author of the book series Gnosis Onward.
Preceded in death by his parents Lewis Edward Graham I and Ida Powell
A private celebration of life was held.
