LIHUE — Kauai police on Tuesday recognized the retirement of K-9 Simon, a 10-year-old Belgian malinois who has been a part of the K-9 unit since 2008.
Simon, whose human partner is Arnold Cayabyab, is trained to smell out methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and marijuana.
In his nine years of service, Simon seized 10 pounds of crystal meth and 70 pounds of marijuana, half a pound of cocaine and over an ounce of heroin, all of which has a street value of $1.1 million.
“His most memorable find was when he recovered three pounds of crystal meth that was stored in a vase with candle wax that was hidden in a parcel,” KPD Sgt. Anthony Morita said.
Simon will enjoy retirement by living with Cayabyab.
