KALAHEO — The Dream Team finished its regular-season play undefeated following its 23-12 win over Kaulupono on Tuesday during the Extreme Termite basketball games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
“This is the game,” said Fran Constantino, one of the Kaulupono coaches on the bench. “The Dream Team is undefeated. We’re going to have to try and contain their height — Olivia Malafu. We just need to stay ahead of her.”
Those words were easier said than done as the Dream team worked its combination of height advantage and quick guard Lele Gonzalez to gain an early lead and hold on during the physically defensive slugfest.
Malafu, combining with Lilinoe Ka‘aihue-Paopao and Ema Andrus for the Dream Team height advantage, finished with game-high scoring honors at 12 points in the win. Gonzalez, Andrus, and Paopao added three points apiece. A charity pair from Taenani Largusa rounded out the win.
Liana Hasegawa, the go-to Kaulupono person on both sides of the ball, was joined by Bethany-Pearl Remigio in scoring four points each in the effort. Kiaura Ortiz-Rita and Chaleigh Lancaster-Fabro each added pairs.
The Ao‘uka Rebels took advantage of a 6-1 halftime lead to take a 21-7 win over the Kauai Lynx behind Skylyn Fagarang and Cece Baliaris combining for 13 points.
Denise Alfonso scored six of the Lynx’s seven points in the final stanza.
Josiah Delos Reyes netted 11 points as the Westside Boys downed the Lihue Lakers, 19-4, in the final game of the night. Bryan Brown netted all four of the Lakers’ points.
