KIPU — Police arrested a Koloa man following a two-car crash that occurred on Kaumualii Highway in Kipu on Monday evening.
At approximately 9 p.m., a Dodge pickup truck was apparently driving west in the eastbound lane, just east of Halfway Bridge, when it struck an oncoming Mazda sedan. The crash caused the pickup truck to spin out of control and strike a guardrail along the eastbound shoulder before it came to a stop along the westbound shoulder of the highway.
The 37-year-old female driver of the sedan was transported by medics to Wilcox Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of Dodge pickup, identified as 38-year-old Craig Fujimoto, did not report any injuries.
As a result of the on-scene investigation, police arrested Fujimoto for reckless driving, inattention to driving, promoting a dangerous drug in the third degree and prohibited acts relating to drug paraphernalia. He has since been released pending investigation.
The sedan had to be towed from the scene due to extensive damage from the crash. Fujimoto’s truck was also towed and is currently being held as evidence.
Kaumualii Highway was closed in both directions to tow vehicles from the scene and allow firefighters to clean oil and fuel that had spilled on the roadway. The highway was reopened at approximately 10:10 p.m.
