KAPAA — Bail for the man arrested in connection with a fatal crash Thursday night was raised to $1 million Saturday afternoon.
Cody Safadago, 46, remains in Kauai police custody. His bail was initially set at $32,000 before being increased to $500,000, and then $1 million.
Kayla Huddy-Lemn of Kapaa, 19, died Thursday night after a head-on crash on Kuhio Highway fronting the Courtyards at Waipouli apartment complex. Huddy-Lemn was heading north about 10:45 p.m. when a Nissan pickup driven by Safadago crossed the center line and struck her Mazda sedan.
Safadago fled on foot and was later located by police near the Wailua Shopping Plaza. He was apprehended following a brief struggle.
Huddy-Lemn was transported to Wilcox Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Safadago sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Investigators said the Nissan truck was stolen from a home on Makaha Road in Kapaa just moments earlier.
Safadago has no known address but is believed to live in the Kalalau Valley and is originally from Washington state.
Safadago was arrested on multiple charges.
