WAILUA — The body of a female hiker who went missing late Saturday afternoon in Wailua was found early Sunday morning in the stream.
The woman had been attempting to cross the stream along the Kaapoko Tunnels Trail with a group of people when she slipped and fell, and then was swept away. The woman managed to grab onto a rock downstream, but when the group hiked to that spot, she was no longer there.
After searching for her proved unsuccessful, the group hiked out and called for help at approximately 5:30 p.m.
R-3 aboard Air-1 searched for the victim upstream and downstream, making several passes amid low-lying clouds. Due to dwindling daylight, the search ended for the day at around 7:30 p.m.
Aerial search operations resumed at 6 a.m. Sunday morning with R-3 following the trail in Air-1, searching up and down the river.
The body of the missing woman was found at approximately 7 a.m. in the Wailua stream.
The name of the decedent will be released when the next of kin has been notified.
