Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from The Shadow radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.
It was stated in August 2016 that the administration is reviewing its options for the vacant space that was once the Lihue Big Save. Please provide an update on the administration’s plans for this space.
Over the course of the past several years, the county has had several discussions with various vendors and organizations in attempt to utilize this space. Some options included using the space for a grocery store, makers space, food hub, among other ideas, but none of those plans materialized. We are currently working with our Office of Economic Development to use this space to provide some type of economic opportunity that would promote locally sourced foods and/or locally made products. Regardless of the tenant for this space, this space will require significant infrastructure improvements.
