KAPAIA — The Kapaia Foundation is hosting Koinobori Raising Day on April 23 starting at 1 p.m. in the area surrounding the Kapaia Swinging Bridge.
Volunteers wishing to assist in raising the 500 koinobori, or flying carp windsocks, are asked to wear comfortable clothes, bring sunscreen, mosquito repellent and scissors.
The koinobori, a symbol of the traditional Japanese Boys’ Day, or more recently, Children’s Day observance, were flown prolifically in the former Kapaia Camp in the early 1900s in celebration of its children, and specifically the boys who lived there.
As a fundraiser for this event, sponsorship opportunities are welcome by sponsoring a koi in 12-, 24-, or 36-inch sizes. A sponsor tag containing the sponsor’s name and a message will be attached to each sponsored fish and will be flown during the display period, which runs from April 25 to May 25 on the grounds surrounding the Kapaia Swinging Bridge.
