WAIMEA — Kauai Interscholastic Federation wrestling tournament director Coach Mac Pigott announced the first Kauai 2017 Spring Tournament schedule, sanctioned by USA wrestling.
“These USAW sanctioned tournaments are geared to provide off-season competition for current KIF wrestlers,” Pigott said. “Wrestlers can improve their skills for the next season. The tournaments also serve as a recruiting venue for youth wrestlers for future participation in their local high school wrestling program.”
The first tournament of the spring series will be contested on April 22 at the Kapaa High School cafeteria.
All tournaments will have Folkstyle, or high school, rules in effect for youth wrestlers. High school wrestlers will be grappling under Freestyle, or Olympic, guidelines. All wrestlers are required to have USAW membership.
Registration for each of the six tournaments which will conclude June 3, will take place starting at 8 a.m. Wrestling starts at 9:30 a.m.
Practice sessions are being held at Kapaa High School on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 3 p.m. under supervision of Coach Jess Jensen who was on the Kapaa High School coaching staff that won its first-ever KIF wrestling title earlier this year.
Jensen, in a statement following the KIF title win, said most of the Kapaa team are young with many being freshmen and sophomores.
“They are a great group of kids, and it has been an honor to coach them,” Jensen said. “They are a great core group to continue building the program at Kapaa.”
Practice on the Westside takes place at the Westside Wrestling Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 6:30 p.m. under Coach Mac Pigott.
Following the April 22 tournament, future tournaments include May 6 at the Bernice Hundley Gym on the campus of Kapaa High School, May 13 at the Clem Gomes Gym on the campus of Waimea High School, May 20 at the Bernice Hundley Gym, May 27 at the Hanapepe Judo dojo.
The Kauai Championships will be contested on June 3 at the Clem Gomes Gym where awards for the top three in each division will be presented.
