LIHUE — Benn Haines of the Kapaa Elementary School finished in a tie with Caleb Paden of the Kekaha Elementary School for Outstanding Boy athlete honors in the elementary division at the county’s age group track and field event that wrapped up Sunday afternoon at Vidinha Stadium.
Hundreds of youngsters poured onto the rubberized track at Vidinha Stadium to participate in field events that included a softball throw and standing long jump as well as compete through track events.
“This is the only event on the island where the younger students can come together like this,” said James Kealalio, coordinator with the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation.
Carlyn Rapozo-Kamoku of the Kapaa Elementary School was awarded the Outstanding Girl athlete honor Saturday.
Kapaa Elementary School took first place followed by Eleele Elementary School in second place. Kekaha Elementary School rounded out the leader schools in third place.
Sunday’s competition involved the middle school division where Island School was awarded first place after Dwight Apao was named the Outstanding Boy athlete.
Second place went to the Waimea Canyon Middle School whose Kailey Ruiz was named the Outstanding Girl athlete for the middle school division.
