LIHUE — Hurricane Iniki struck Kauai 24 years ago, damaging more than 5,000 homes while destroying over 1,000.
That destruction on the Garden Isle gave way to the Contractors Association of Kauai Home Show.
The event runs from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.
“We started this show as a result of Hurricane Iniki 24 years ago,” said Karen Taketa, director for the Contractors Association on Kauai.
She said the purpose of this show is to give people the opportunity to be prepared in case of emergency or they want to rebuild or remodel.
“This way, they know what types of products and services are out there in the marketplace,” Taketa said.
The event presented by First Hawaiian Bank is sold out, with all 34 available vendor booth spaces occupied.
The Kauai Board of Realtors will present results of its survey on the new proposed Rice Street improvements and infills at 5 tonight. The KBR will also have information on the cesspool conversion tax credit program.
Sherman Shiraishi will offer a presentation on living wills, trusts and Durable Power of Attorney starting at 6.
CAK member Tim Waite of Simpson Strong Ties will be leading a homeowner’s clinic on high wind strengthening options from 7.
Providing homeowners with resources and information is essential for Taketa.
“I hope that people will look at their home as an investment and that it is in their best interest to keep their home in the best possible manner in case they sell or need to sell their home for the best price possible,” Taketa said.
New products will include the Tiny Homes Collection from Honsador Lumber. Kauai Flooring and Interiors will showcase its waterproof laminate flooring.
A high-wind window protection system by Florida-based Storm Stoppers, billed as an alternative to plywood, will be available for viewing.
Ace Hardware/Housemart will bring out its new casual living furniture and accessories.
The 25th annual CAK Home Show is brought to the community by the Contractors Association of Kauai, First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaii Gas, Nathan Wood General Contractor, Princeville at Hanalei, Trex Company and the County of Kauai.
The homes at Ho‘oluna at Kohea Loa project in Hanamaulu, and the Emerald Homes at the Wainani project in Poipu will be among the items being shown, Friday afternoon and Saturday.
