LIHUE — Monday was a special day for Samira Siale of Enterprise Holdings Foundation as she juggled an oversized check and a load of lei at the Moikeha Building, Lihue Civic Center.
Samira was joined by Shannon Maxwell, Enterprise Kauai manager, in presenting the Kauai Lifeguard Association, represented by Kauai Bureau Chief Kalani Vierra of the Ocean Safety Bureau, with a check for $2,000 from the Enterprise Holdings Foundation.
Vierra was joined by Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr., Kauai Fire Chief Robert Westerman, Gerald Hurd, and Tyrus Siale, the newly promoted water safety officers from the Ocean Safety Bureau.
Tyrus is Samira’s husband, and received his Certificate of Promotion to Ocean Safety Office III from Samira who was joined by Maxwell in presenting congratulatory lei to the trained rescue craft operator.
Tyrus and Hurd were Ocean Safety Bureau promotions, being joined by six Kauai Fire Department promotions, including two Fire Captains who were honored for their achievements before an audience that included proud children and family.
Hurd received his Certificate of Promotion for Ocean Safety Office IV after being with the Ocean Safety Bureau for 15 years as a lieutenant.
He is also a Junior Lifeguard instructor and volunteers as an AYSO soccer coach.
Maui Kjeldsen a 12-year veteran with the Kauai Fire Department, was promoted to Fire Fighter II Rescue, moving from his assignment at Engine 3, Lihue under Capt. Clinton Fujii to Rescue 3, Lihue under command of Capt. Gordon Tamura.
Sean Kitamura, a 16-year KFD veteran and a 1993 graduate of Kapaa High School, moves from Station 8, Kaiakea Fire Station as a Fire Fighter II on the Hazmat unit to Fire Fighter III assigned to the KFD Prevention Bureau as a fire inspector.
Blair Masao Yamashita, a product of the Kapaa public education system and a graduate of Oregon State University, has been a firefighter with the KFD since 2005. He moves to the Prevention Bureau as a Fire Fighter III under Capt. Daryl Date.
Aaron Hawthorne, a 14-year veteran, moves as a Fire Fighter III to the KFD Training Bureau. Hawthorne is the chair of the Kauai Fire Department Health and Wellness Committee and a part of the Aquatic Rescue Response Team.
Kauai Fire Capt. Bryan Doo has been with KFD for nearly 16 years and served most recently as a FFIII on the Rescue unit.
Kauai Fire Capt. Jeffrey Weiss has been with the KFD for 22 years, his most recent assignment being as a FFIII at Station 2, Kapaa. Weiss is a Fire Caption at Station 6, Hanapepe.
