LIHUE — This is the first time we’re doing this, said Wes Perreira, Hawaii Foodbank, Kauai Branch director.
“I have two pallets of (Signature Kitchens) rice for this campaign,” said Lesah Merritt, store manager for Safeway at the Hokulei Village Shopping Center. “I also have more ordered and coming in time for Friday.”
Safeway stores on Kauai and the Hawaii Foodbank, Kauai Branch, are hosting a buy a bag of Safeway brand 20-pound bag of rice and donate it to the Hawaii Foodbank, Kauai Branch who will have volunteers at the store doors from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
There is a need for rice at the Hawaii Foodbank, Kauai Branch, Perreira said. During the 2016 fiscal year, more than 13,000 Kauai people were recipients of food from the Hawaii Foodbank, Kauai’s network of distribution centers.
Merritt was more concerned about her store’s performance.
“I’m doing some phone calls,” she said. “There’s no way the Waipouli store should be able to out-do us on this.”
Michelle Panoke of the Hawaii Foodbank, Kauai Branch, said, “If you wanna be nice, buy rice.”
