LIHUE — The mayor is seeking over $200 million for the operating budget and just under $15 million for capitol improvements.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. submitted his proposed budget for fiscal year 2017-2018 to the Kauai County Council on Tuesday, seeking approval of a $204 million operating budget and a $14.3 million capital improvement program.
“This proposed budget continues to pursue the shared goal of the county council and the administration to build a financial strategy that seeks to address the county’s short-term objectives while maintaining long-term financial stability,” Carvalho said.
The proposal is an $15 million increase from the $189 operating budget approved in June.
Part of the budget includes an increase of over $3 million to other road services. The $6 million allocation would fund an islandwide resurfacing project.
Carvalho said the proposed budget will remain structurally balanced.
“I look forward to working with our County Council in the coming weeks to make important financial decisions for the people of Kauai and Niihau.”
Mayor Carvalho will present his State of the County address at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Lihue Civic Center, Mo‘ikeha Building courtyard.
