PO‘IPU — Artist Bruna Stude of galerie 103 said H.C. Westermann is not even here Monday night as she supervised the installation of Big Brother at The Shops at Kukuiula.
“H.C. Westermann passed away in 1981,” Stude said. “He’s not even here. But his lithograph, ‘An Affair in the Islands’ hangs in the office. That provided the impetus for the multi-generational survey of the island theme.”
The exhibit, An Affair in the Islands, opened at galerie 103 Wednesday with an opening reception for the 14 participating artists Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit continues through May 30.
Stude said An Affair of the Islands is Kauai’s voice to the Inaugural Honolulu Biennial which opens on Oahu.
“This adds a whole new dimension to the space,” said artist Sally French who helped with the installation of Big Brother who has an eye on the world. “And, it’s not even finished, yet.”
Participating artists in the exhibit “laced with passion and affection” include Chris Atkinson, Eli Baxter, A. Kimberlin Blackburn, Doug Britt, Kathleen Adair Brown, Jeremy Dean, Margaret Exekiel, French, Roberta Griffith, Ben Kikuyama, David Kuraoka, Tom Lieber, Ante Mandaric, Deyana Mielke, Bruna Stude, and Wayne Zebzda.
“It’s so hard when you have to select by yourself,” Stude said. “Sometimes, it goes a lot easier when you have a team.”
