KALAHEO — Juliana Nacino was watching TV Wednesday evening when she heard the sound of a large fire behind her home.
She got up slowly and proceeded to her back porch to check out the noise.
“I said, ‘Oh my God! My neighbor’s house is on fire.’ I was so scared,” she said. “In my condition, I can’t speak well because of my stroke, and I cannot move too fast. I went out, just in case my house catches on fire.”
A three-bedroom home was destroyed by fire Wednesday evening along Kaumualii Highway in Kalaheo, according to Kauai Fire Department officials.
The adult male occupant fled the home without injury. The fire appears to have started on the front porch of the home, but the cause remains under investigation, officials said.
Investigators from KFD’s Fire Prevention Bureau estimate the fire caused roughly $200,000 in damages to the structure and its contents.
Kalaheo firefighters were on scene shortly after 11 p.m. to find the single-story home fully involved.
The crew was soon joined by personnel from the Hanapepe and Lihue fire stations, as well as the on-duty battalion chief.
The fire was fully extinguished just before midnight, but the home is considered a total loss.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross are assisting the displaced man.
Police closed Kaumualii Highway, from Halewili Road to Papalina Road, from 11:15 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
