All of us get that urge to get away from it all. Sometimes it just feels good to wander out into nature, to get a sense of how small our “big” problems can seem compared to the incredible beauty and vastness of the world around us.
And what better place than Kauai, home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Over a million visitors a year travel to the “Garden Island” to experience the freedom that comes from beholding its breathtaking vistas. Residents enjoy it just as much, whether it is lounging on the beach, hunting in the wilds of Koke’e, or trekking the many trails in the mountains. Standing, gazing at the sheer depth and scale of Waimea Canyon or up at the cathedrals of Na Pali Coast, it becomes very easy to contemplate our place in the world and renew our breath of life.
“i am small: The Kauai Edition,” by Kauai resident/photographer Mallory Roe, is a celebration of this very notion.
In her stunning book of photography, dedicated solely to the wonders of Kaua’i and our place among it, Roe captures wondrously unique images of a variety of natural locales on the island. These aren’t your “garden variety” shots of Kalalau, Waimea Canyon, or Wailua Falls either. Her composition, perspectives, and use of color brings a whole new sense of place to these locations and many others, also showcasing the rolling expanses of Kauai and the incredibly awesome nighttime display of stars we are lucky enough to enjoy by being here.
The stunning photography contained in “i am small” has made people cry in our bookstore, and for many this is the treasure they take home to share with their friends and family to show them the magical place they remember as Kauai.
