Kauai High School’s varsity boys basketball team lost in the opening round of the Snapple Boys Basketball Championships — Division II state tournament.
The unseeded Red Raiders lost to No. 4 seed Honokaa of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, 71-55, Wednesday at Kalani High School in Honolulu.
Kauai High had a two-point lead after the first quarter and trailed at halftime by just six points.
The Dragons outscored the Red Raiders in the second half, 32-22. Kauai High managed just six points in the third quarter.
Bryce Johnson-Cormack led Kauai High with 19 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Shaun Paglinawan had 11 points and six rebounds. Gunner Burkman had nine points, all from outside the three-point line.
Kamuela Spencer-Herring got a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds for Honokaa. Kelvin Falk had 15 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Kauai will next play the loser of the opening round game between No. 1 Saint Francis of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Farrington of the Oahu Interscholastic Association. Results from that game were not available by press time.
Kauai High varsity boys basketball head coach Ipo Yoshioka couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.
