God bless America for political cartoons
Recently, as I read The Garden Island newspaper, I had the best belly laugh at the wit and the talent of a certain political cartoonist. When I had sufficiently recovered, I was reminded of a time when I was exploring Bali in Indonesia and came upon a very good local caricaturist on the beach in Nirvana (yes, that’s correct) whose artwork I admired.
He told me that I would really love his older brother’s work. So I asked to see it. He explained that that would be impossible as his brother was in prison for publishing one Indonesian presidential political cartoon! I remarked, lovely to live in the USA where freedom of speech prevails.
I don’t know how your staff chooses which political cartoonist to publish, but I got curious and looked up the signatures of those you do and found dozens of names and websites. Described as local, national, and international news with opinion and humor mixed in to make a testimony of current events.
One publishing house states, “a unique language of political cartoonists who jab, poke, stick, skewer, prod, pinch, slice, dice, lambaste, lampoon, belittle, slap, wallop, ridicule, scorn, mourn, embrace, criticize, satirize, and eulogize” when describing Jeff Stahler, political cartoonist.
I look forward to your next choice each day and relish in the wit and talent I see. I’ve decided to cut them out, collect them all, and wallpaper my kitchen and dining room with them to stir up dinner talk for years to come!
