HONOLULU — Kauai High School junior Jack Machorek finished second in the 200-yard individual medley Saturday during the K. Mark Takai Hawaii High School Athletic Association state swimming and diving championships on Oahu.
The Kauai junior touched the wall at 1 minute, 54.52 seconds to claim the silver medal just .41 seconds ahead of Dong Hyeon Hwang of Kalani High School.
His swim for silver eluded gold by two seconds, the top medal being claimed by M.J. Mao of Pac-5 (1:54.52), who broke the state record for this event during the preliminary heats contested Friday. His record-setting swim stopped the clocks at 1:49.02.
Machorek also had a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle where he bettered his preliminary swim (4:42.63) by nearly two seconds to touch at 4:40.77. Michael Petrides of Mid Pacific Institute found gold in this event at 4:28.91.
Machorek’s performance was joined by fellow junior Zachary Safford who finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly on a swim of 52.36. This event was also taken by Pac-5 senior Mao, who set the state record of 47.13 in 2016, and finished Saturday at 47.61.
These performances from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation student athletes led the Kauai High School boys team to a ninth-place tie with Lahainalunha at six points each, a point shy of Kalani boys who ended with seven points. Top team honors went to Punahou who captured 44.5 points for the boys and 88 points for the girls.
The KIF girls team, represented by Kapaa, did not point.
The event was held at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
