Dairy’s PR can’t fool everyone
As a long-term resident of the South Shore of Kauai, I’m just wondering how ignorant Hawaii Dairy Farms spokespeople for the proposed Mahaulepu dairy think we really are?
Well, for starters, we are smart enough to know what 699 “mature” dairy cows are. What they are is “very pregnant” mother cows ready to drop within 30 to 60 days maximum. That doesn’t represent 699 cows. That represents 699 cows and about 699 calves. That’s approximately 1,400 cows, and they’re just getting started.
And so far there is no proven market for the milk.
If they do indeed want to give people fresh milk, then they should pursue this dubious endeavor in other countries and not in what is now an Eden for many, as attested to by our vibrant and vital visitor economy.
What this really represents is a money grab by the same group of people who had all the Koloa post office monkeypod trees cut down four years ago in anticipation of an imaginary upscale mall.
That never happened. Neither should this.
