WAILUA — Kapaa High School swept the junior varsity races and picked up a win in the varsity mixed race on Saturday to work toward the Kauai Interscholastic Federation championships which is scheduled for Saturday at the Wailua River.
The Warriors were the only team in the JV girls race, its crew finishing with a paddle of 4 minutes, 58.81 seconds in the uncontested run over the short course, adding first finishes in the JV boys (4:09.49) and the JV Mixed (4:20.25).
Kauai High School fielded a varsity girls team during the preliminary heat (9:50.77), but did not participate in the finals which gave the win to Kapaa wahine who stroked to an 8:24.55 victory, a big improvement over its 9:48.03 preliminary run. Waimea crossed nearly five seconds back (9:45.20), a lag over its 9:04.75 preliminary run. Kapaa holds the lead in the KIF standings with 16 points based on its undefeated record.
Waimea High School boys took the varsity boys on a paddle of 8:10.99 over Kapaa (8:24.55) to retain its lead in the KIF standings, improving to 14 points, but challenged by the Warriors who hold 10 points. Kauai, not participating in Saturday’s regatta, holds two points.
The Menehune also captured the varsity mixed division races with an 8:48.29 paddle, nearly three seconds ahead of Kapaa (8:45.42). Kauai filled in the No. 3 position with an 8:52.88 run, dropping from its 9:24.52 pace in the preliminary run. Waimea’s win keeps the Menehune in the lead with 14 points, challenged by the Warriors at 10 points and Kauai at four points.
Following Saturday’s regatta, Waimea leads the standings with leads in the JV boys (16 points), the JV mixed (15 points), the varsity boys (14 points), and varsity mixed (14 points).
Kapaa follows with leads in the JV girls (undefeated 16 points), and the varsity girls (undefeated 16 points).
According to the KIF schedule at press time, the KIF Championships take place Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the Wailua River.
