WAILUA — Waimea High School paddling teams picked up wins in the junior varsity boys, junior varsity mixed and varsity mixed races to stay in the lead of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation outrigger canoe standings Saturday during the last of the distance regattas on the Wailua River.
The Menehune varsity boys team also spoiled Kapaa’s lead in that division when the Waimea A team crossed the four-mile course on a paddle of 28 minutes, 14.31 seconds — nearly a minute ahead of Kapaa’s A team who crossed at 29:08.02 for first place. The Warriors, despite giving up the lead to Waimea, lost their grip on the lead and slipped to eight points while Waimea boys improved to 10 points in that class.
Waimea currently leads the standings with 12 points each in the JV boys, JV mixed, and varsity mixed. Waimea also holds the lead in varsity boys at 10 points.
Kapaa holds the lead in JV girls and varsity girls with 12 points in each of the categories. Kapaa is second in JV boys at five points, just one point ahead of Kauai JV boys. The Warriors are also second in the varsity boys at eight points and varsity mixed at six points.
Kauai High School rounds out the leaderboard with a second place showing in JV mixed (5 points), and third in JV boys (4 points), varsity girls (3 points), varsity boys (2 points) and varsity mixed (3 points).
Saturday, the KIF outrigger paddling regatta changes to the sprint format at the Wailua River. JV races start at 9 a.m.
