LIHUE — Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is warning the public about phone scams targeting KIUC customers.
KIUC has received multiple calls from customers saying they received a call that their account was delinquent and they had to pay or their power would be shut off.
KIUC does not initiate calls to customers about late bills.
Never provide personal, confidential or financial information to anyone when responding to unsolicited phone calls or e-mails. If you’re not sure if the call is legitimate, get the caller’s name, phone number and company name and tell them you’ll call them back after verifying their information. Report it to the police.
Similar calls were reported in September 2016, October 2015, February 2014 and in April 2013.
KIUC also offers online account information on a platform called SmartHub. Members can sign up at https://kiuc.smarthub.coop to access KIUC’s self-service site.
