Lauren is a sweet, quiet young woman with a 2-year-old who has faced some major challenges this year.
Having had a long, tumultuous relationship with her mom, she left her home. She spent some time living in friends’ homes, was homeless for a time and ending up in the hospital after overdosing due to severe depression that was intensified due to being in an abusive relationship for a few months.
Since then, Lauren has taken action to separate herself from her ex-boyfriend. She has secured stable housing and has been spending more time with her mom. She has also been holding down a job at a restaurant in town.
Despite her many hardships, Lauren is determined to keep moving in the right direction and with your help, she’ll get where she hopes to go.
Lauren is among the people The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund hopes to help during the holidays. Donations to the Christmas Fund will be distributed by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at local stores to make wishes come true.
Each donated dollar is accounted for and carefully recorded. There are no administrators collecting salaries. Volunteers run the show.
If you hold a fundraiser for the Christmas Fund or know of one, let us know and we’ll spread the word. Anyone making a donation of $50 or more may have their picture presenting the check to Zonta published in TGI.
The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund was established in the early 1980s and has helped thousands of families.
Only monetary donations are accepted. Checks payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. For more information, call Dimples Kano at 822-4517.
Others the Christmas fund hopes to help:
w Julie was abandoned by her mother and has been abused by several of her dad’s girlfriends growing up. She ended up on probation, using meth and in an abusive relationship. She is now in a foster home where she is trying to get caught up in school and back on track. She needs school supplies, clothing, bedding, a haircut and would like to be able to go to prom and get senior pictures like her classmates.
w Shawna was using meth and living at the beach when she realized she was pregnant. She is now trying to get clean and get into an independent living program or clean and sober house to take care of herself and unborn child. Her boyfriend is off-island at a drug treatment program. She is alone and has nothing. Shawna needs clothing, bedding, food and soon will need baby supplies.
